The Latin “fide” the English “faith” and the Greek “pistis” all have this same origin.

The problem we have in translating the Bible is that sometimes there is no single word in English that can represent the Greek word. That’s the situation here.

To “faithe” is to firmly BIND yourself to something – a VERB (action)

people refer to faith as JUST a mental state with the connotation of having doubt … the modern use of the word faith is NOT the way it’s used in the New Testament … to FAITHE is also a VERB

it also refers to “binding” to a covenant relationship

GOD is the source of “RIGHTeousness” – not your “self-righteousness” … by God’s Grace … not your “merit”

Faith motivated Abraham to obey God’s call and leave the familiar to discover the territory he was destined to inherit from God. So he left with only a promise and without even knowing ahead of time where he was going, Abraham stepped out in faith. – Hebrews 11:8

Abraham is known as the father of our faith (Galatians 3:7). Why? Abraham set the course of his life by faith, setting an example for us to follow.

God asked Abraham to go on a journey with him. A journey that would lead him to his destiny, promising Abraham he would make him into a great nation, make his name great, and bless all the peoples on earth through him (Genesis 12:2-3).

Nevertheless, Abraham did not get to know where he was going, what he would experience, how he would get there, how long it would take, or what his life would be like when he arrived. Having nothing but the promise of God, Abraham stepped out on faith.

What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead.

Isaac asked his father where the lamb was for the sacrifice, and Abraham answered that the Lord would provide the lamb. Saddened and confused, Abraham bound Isaac with ropes and placed him on the stone altar.

Just as Abraham raised the knife to slay his son, the angel of the Lord called out to Abraham to stop and not harm the boy. The angel said he knew that Abraham feared the Lord because he had not withheld his only son.

When Abraham looked up, he saw a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. He sacrificed the animal, provided by God, instead of his son.

Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham and said:

“I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” (Genesis 22:16-18, NIV)

God had earlier promised Abraham that he would make a great nation of him through Isaac, which forced Abraham to either trust God with what mattered most to him or to distrust God. Abraham chose to trust and obey.

Abraham told his servants “WE” WILL COME BACK to you, meaning BOTH he and Isaac.

Abraham believed God would either provide a substitute sacrifice or would raise Isaac from the dead.

This incident foreshadows God’s sacrifice of his only son, Jesus Christ, on the cross at Calvary, for the sin of the world. God’s great love required of himself what he did not require of Abraham.

Greek – “METANOIA” … he Greek μετάνοια, means after-thought or beyond-THOUGHT, with meta meaning “after” or “beyond”

In Classical Greek metanoia meant changing one’s MIND about someone or something … it is a purely INTELLECTUAL activity … it does not necessarily emphasisize FEELINGS

metanoia as NOT from LATIN – comprising contrition, confession, Latin contritus ‘ground to pieces’, i.e. crushed by guiltis repentance for sins one has committed.

and penances – a “simple” mental choice … RETURN (action) … NOT (feeling) REMORSE

(from the Latin contritus ‘ground to pieces’, i.e. crushed by guilt is repentance for sins one has committed

concept of turning from and to. The from is from unrighteous behaviour, and the to is to the “Lamb of God”

repentance is not a meritorious work in any sense. It is simply a turning away from our old direction as we turn to Christ

for Jews living at the time of Jesus, “repentance” meant “a fundamental change in THINKING and LIVING

The HEBREW word shûb (pronounced shoove) occurs 1058 times in the Old Testament. It simply means to TURN, either literally changing DIRECTION (RETURNing) or as a metaphor for a radical change in lifestyle and behavior. It is not used of a mere change of intention, unconnected with behaviour.

Another point to note is that whenever you turn, you turn FROM one thing and turn to ANOTHER

The constant refrain of the prophets is calling Israel to repent from their idolatry and return to their God.

REPENTANCE – PSALM 51

DAVID says to God, “AGAINST YOU, ONLY YOU, have I SINNED” (v. 4)

The psalm begins: “Have MERCY on me, O God, according to your UNFAILING LOVE” (v. 1).

David appeals for FORGIVENESS based on what he knows about God’s character: that he is merciful. David knows God is committed to him in a relationship of “unfailing love”—and when we come before God in repentance, we do so because of his covenant with us through Christ.

The first step to meaningful confession is understanding what sin is.

David uses THREE DIFFEREDNT WORLDS for it in Psalm 51“INIQUITY” “SINS” and “TRANSGRESSIONS”

“TRANSGRESSIONS” is rebellion against God’s authority and law,

“INIQUITY” is a distortion of what should be, and

“SIN” is missing the mark. David also says his sin is deep – there is no minimizing or excusing it.

In verses 12–15, David asks God to make him so JOYFUL: “Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare YOUR PRAISE”

David prays, “Do not . . . take your Holy SPIRIT from me” (v. 11). But the fact that David is grieved over his sin is a sign that the Spirit is at work in him

The psalm begins: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love” (v. 1). David appeals for forgiveness based on what he knows about God’s character … that he is merciful ….because of his covenant with us through Christ.

David’s sin hurt multiple people. He committed adultery, orchestrated a murder, and tried to cover it all up

DAVID says to God, “AGAINST YOU, ONLY YOU, have I SINNED” (v. 4).

SIN is MISSING the MARK – GOD’s MARK

Our sin does hurt others, and we must seek forgiveness from them, but all sin is ultimately against God.

We have the full revelation of JESUS, who “has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with SIN by the SACRIFICE of HIMSELF” – Hebrews 3:26

“The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it. – Luke 16:16

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. – Luke 13:44

The CROSS [Commitment] …

CROSS … COMMITMENT … HIS KINGDOM …

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his OWN life, he cannot be MY DISCIPLE. – Luke 14

Whoever does not bear his OWN CROSS and COME AFTER ME cannot be my disciple.

For which of you, desiring to BUILD a TOWER, does not first sit down and count the COST, whether he has enough to complete it?

Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’

Or what king, going out to encounter another king in WAR, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not RENOUNCE ALL THAT HE HAS CANNOT be MY DISCIPLE disciple” – Luke 14:26

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the KINGDOM of GOD is at hand; REPENT and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:14

But seek ye FIRST the KINGDOM of GOD, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be ADDED unto you. -Matthew 6:33
