DEMOCRACY and DICTATORSHIP – REACTION
INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS vs COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

INDIVIDUAL “RIGHTS”:
“GET UP, STAND UP” by Bob Marley

“Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God.” Thomas Jefferson
I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. Thomas Jefferson

“Give me liberty or give me death.” Patrick Henry

“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent”. – ” Thomas Jefferson

Agree? Disagree?
___1)All individuals have are born with the “gifts” of “life” and ___
“free will”. Tyranny is anything which interferes or violates people’s “natural rights”, which are “gifts” from “the Creator” or “nature”.

John Locke said people voluntarily formed government, to serve their needs. Government is meant to serve the “governed”.

If government violates this “social contract”, the governed have a RIGHT to REBEL.

What had been voluntarily created could also be voluntarily changed or eliminated.

People have a “RIGHT” to “GET UP” FOR “REVOLUTION” and a
“RESPONSIBILITY” to “STAND UP” and FIGHT AGAINST TYRANNY

COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
“HEAVEN HELP US ALL” performed by Stevie Wonder

“OUR DISORGANIZED COMPETITIVE LIFE MUST PASS INTO AN ORGANIC COOPERATIVE LIFE.” American “Progressive” Walter Rauschenbusch
“Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country” – JFK

“RECOGNIZING that MY FATE remains TIED UP with THEIR FATES, that MY INDIVIDUAL SALVATION IS NOT GOING to COME ABOUT WITHOUT a COLLECTIVE SALVATION for the COUNTRY” – Barack Obama

Agree? Disagree?
___2)The songwriter rightly PROTESTS the “problems” of humanity caused by our freedom – exploitation, carelessness and self-destruction to name a few. .. Individual freedoms result in collective chaos.

SOCIAL JUSTICE” obligates those who benefit from the “blessings” of freedom to help “save” those who experience and suffer from freedom’s destructive side. “

We are ALL “CHILDREN of GOD” who deserve dignity and respect from each other, despites our “flaws”.

Our selfish, anti-social and COMPETITIVE culture and nature require us to look outside ourselves to help each other. . We cannot enjoy our individual freedoms without actively seeking “collective salvation” for all.

All individuals have a responsibility to sacrifice their freedom[s] for the collective good. Without “helpful” cooperation, our competitive nature will lead to our national destruction.

“It is when people form together as GROUPS, under the “MASK” of “RIGHTEOUSNESS”,, that people LOSE a sense of INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY and act like “BEASTS”. (the mob)

Agree? Disagree?
___3)There is a danger that “cooperation” for the “collective good” becomes coercive (involuntary) conformity, collective “TYRANNY” is often done with the “mask of righteousness”.

People are either fooled or forced to follow fake “progress” and false gods.. (their leaders/tribe/state) Most individuals will “give up” their FREEDOMS. for “SECURITY”. Most are not willing to sacrifice for their INDEPENDENCE,more than willing to SURRENDER to DEPENDENCE on others.

WRITING PROMPT:

“HARMONY vs HOSTILITY”

Freedom” implies a RESPONSIBILITY to “STAND UP” against “tyranny” (abuse of power), to protect your “sacred” rights.

Humanity is ANTI-SOCIAL – we require PROTECTION FROM (not “HURT”) EACH OTHER (our IN-humanity)

Remaining silent and/or doing nothing allows tyranny (“democratic despotism”) to spread collective “TOTAL-itariansm”

INDIVIDUALS have the power to “protect” themselves …

AND/OR

Freedom implies a RESPONSIBILITY to “HELP” others

Humanity is SOCIAL – we need to PROTECT EACH OTHER.
(our HUMANITY)

We are all “flawed” creatures (the “equality” of sin) who need “help” from outside ourselves.

COOPERATION (harmony vs hostility) is essential to maintain a “civil” and “democratic” society.

The “PROBLEM” of HUMAN “GOOD” and “EVIL”

Aristotle: “For just as man is the best of the animals when completed, when separated from law and adjudication he is the WORST of all”. (mankind’s “INhumanity”)

Humanity can be “reasonable”, BUT human nature is more governed by “passion”, irrationality and injustice.

A “realistic” view of humanity and history should be “pessimistic“.

(Is humanity essentially “GOOD” or “EVIL”?

IF we are essentially “good”, EXPLAIN the persistence of “evil” in history.

What is the “SOURCE of “good”? Of “evil”? [Is it “internal” or “external”?“]
